{"id":765,"date":"2025-09-22T10:19:28","date_gmt":"2025-09-22T10:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.transition-counselling.co.uk\/?page_id=765"},"modified":"2025-09-22T10:39:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-22T10:39:12","slug":"relationship-and-couples-therapy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.transition-counselling.co.uk\/index.php\/relationship-and-couples-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Relationship and Couples Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>Do we need Relationship Therapy?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Strong, healthy relationships are an essential part of happy contented lives.\u00a0 But what do we do when there are problems between ourselves and our partner?\u00a0 Often it can help to attend therapy together.<\/p>\n<p>You may question the need to bring a third party into an already difficult situation.\u00a0 Or feel embarrassed that you need to look for help.\u00a0 However as a therapist my aim is to work with your relationship, not to judge you or your partner in any way or to side with one of you against the other.\u00a0 Therapy is about looking to the future with hope for something better.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transition-counselling.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/couple1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-573 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transition-counselling.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/couple1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"535\" height=\"645\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Relationship counselling can make a difference when you feel that the two of you can&#8217;t manage your difficulties alone.\u00a0 There are lots of factors which can lead to people coming to couples therapy including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dissatisfaction with the relationship<\/li>\n<li>Constant or damaging arguments<\/li>\n<li>Infidelity (becoming intimately involved with someone outside the relationship)<\/li>\n<li>Lack of communication<\/li>\n<li>Impact of trauma or crisis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Making a difficult situation easier<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attending therapy as a couple is a tough decision as it means trying to be honest, not only with me as your therapist, but also with your partner.\u00a0 That can seem really daunting.\u00a0 However it is worthwhile remembering that you have a common goal: the desire for a better life.<\/p>\n<p>The other factor which can make relationship counselling hard is that often it is sought as the \u2018last resort\u2019.\u00a0 Rather than seeking therapy to maintain or improve a situation counselling is regarded as the sink or swim option.\u00a0 I am mindful of the additional pressure this can bring to the process.<\/p>\n<p>My role as a therapist is to focus on the relationship, to enable both of you to speak freely and feel heard.\u00a0\u00a0 I will encourage a positive environment for communication rather than arguments.\u00a0 The aim is to move forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens in Relationship Therapy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I aim to focus our sessions on solutions not problems.<\/p>\n<p>At our first meeting I will ask about what has brought each of you to counselling and about your aims for our work together.\u00a0 We will talk about the current state of the relationship and think about where you would like to be.\u00a0 \u00a0 This initial session is longer at 90 minutes as experience has indicated that 60 minutes is usually insufficient time.<\/p>\n<p>We will meet together but at the start of our work I find it useful to have some individual sessions.\u00a0 The reason behind this is to offer time and space to consider aspects such as the beliefs, relationships and issues each of you are bringing to the partnership.\u00a0 Better understanding of yourselves can help you as part of a couple.\u00a0 We will then be able to bring this insight into the joint sessions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transition-counselling.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Atanymoment.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-501 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.transition-counselling.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Atanymoment.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"488\" height=\"350\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>What kinds of people do you work with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I work with people from all kinds of backgrounds, cultures and lifestyles.\u00a0 Your faith or family expectations may be an important influence on your lives and relationship or seem irrelevant.
